    Early life and education

    Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was born on 28 June 1995 in Sedgefield, Western Cape, to Bennie Peters and Anne-Marie Steenkamp.[2][3] She identified her half-sister, Franje, who was born with cerebellar agenesis, as the most significant motivator in her life.

    Franje died on 4 May 2019, aged 13.[4][5][6][7]

    Nel-Peters graduated from North-West University in March 2017, a few days before winning the Miss South Africa 2017 competition.[8] She is fluent in both English and Afrikaans.[9][10]
