Gul Agha Sherzai, 58, a Pashtun from the Barakzai tribe, he was born Mohammad Shafiq, became rich as a mujahedin commander fighting the Soviet occupation.

Sherzai was a strong warlord but also an outsider who needed to work with and through the regime in Kabul to establish control over this eastern border province.

He took the name Gul Agha when he joined his father in the Mujahideen ((National Islamic Front of Afghanistan, or NIFA), who were fighting against the Soviet invasion. His father was murdered and he added Sherzai (Pashto for "son of lion") as his last name.
