Manuel Francisco dos Santos, known affectionately as Garrincha, was born on October 28, 1933, near the Brazilian city of Magé.

Born with congenital deformities, including a shorter right leg and a deformed spine, he also suffered from scoliosis and strabismus. Due to his small stature and carefree nature, he earned the nickname Garrincha, after the wren bird.
